Maryland was established with religious freedom for Catholics. The colonial economy was based on tobacco cultivated by Africans who had been enslaved.

Rebecca (Rebeckath) Beard was born about 1659 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. She was the daughter of Richard Beard and Rachel Robins.

She married John Nicholson several years before 1681 when her father died and left her and her sons part of Indian Range.

Their children and life together are described in detail in the section on John and Rachel Nicholson.

In the early 1700s, her nephew, Richard Clark, terrorized Annapolis.
